ECU flash FAQS
Q: What is an ECU flash?
A: ECU flash, ECU remap, ECU flashing/remapping, reflash, ECU Tuning are just a few commonly used terms for the same thing with ultimate the same end result. It is a process of replacing the contents of your ECU with different paramaters in order to get better engine performance. Before we do this we’ll copy your current settings in case you ever want to restore the program to its original settings.
Q: Why is it called reflash/flashing?
A: Inside your ECU is a physical memory chip, that uses the same technology as a USB stick/drive, hence the term reflash/flashing.
Q: Why is it called Remap?
A: When we read and download the contents of your ECU, the files contained inside are called maps, which control specific items of the engine, like ignition timing, fuel injection timing, throttle response, etc. Remapping is changing these values to improve the engine performance.
Q: What is tuning?
A: Tuning is the process of adjusting. Engine tuning is the same process but changing settings like the amount of air, fuel, spark timing etc.
Q: What’s a dyno?
A: Dyno is short for dynamometer. It’s a “table” you can place the vehicle on with a big motor under the wheel(s) that drive the vehicle which measures power and torque.
Q: What is dyno tuning?
A: Dyno tuning is using a dyno to check and adjust the engine settings while on a dynamometer.
Q: Why doesn’t the manufacturer do this from the start?
A: The answer can have many reasons. Manufacturers produce many different vehicle models so one reason could be that they’d like to fit the same ECU in different model vehicles to keep their cost down. The result is often that the settings are chosen with a high safety threshold and thus the engine is not performing to the best safe capabilities.
Q: Do you have a sample chart of a reflash?
A: We have several sample charts to show the difference but not for every type/model.
Q: How do I know if it really makes a difference?
A: All our maps have been tested on a dyno. You should feel the difference in performance immediately after installation.
Q: Will this lead to more wear and tear of the engine?
A: Not if you don’t change your riding style and provide us with all the required information/modifications, so we can give you the best possible program available.
Q: How can you increase the power output without additional wear?
A: W are raising the limit to enable POTENTIAL engine performance. As mentioned earlier the standard program usually has settings with a lower threshold than can safely be achieved by the engine.
Q: Will my fuel consumption be affected?
A: Yes, if you drive/ride your vehicle in a normal manner you should see an improvement. However, the tendency of most people is that we tend to change our behaviour when the vehicle is more responsive. So to answer the consumption question, it all depends on how fast you turn your hand on the throttle or move your foot on the pedal.
Q: Can you reflash it back to stock?
A: Of course we can reprogam the ECU back with your original settings. Fees Apply.
Q: Can you remap my unit if it is not on your website?
A: We’ve successfully remapped over 600 different units as old as i.e. CBR600RR from 2003, Kawasaki Z900, Yamaha XT1200 so if your model is not on our website I encourage you to contact us. Some ECU units need to be cut open to read/write the data directly from/to the memory chip. This service is litte bit more expensive.
Q: How long is the process?
A: Our standard turn-around-time is 4 weeks but we do our utmost to return your unit back sooner.
Q:What if I have modifications like intake and exhaust?
A: We take these things into consideration so you need to let us know. That’s why we have a special form to complete before we start the process of reflashing.
Q: What’s the maintenance after a reflash?
A: With normal driving/riding behavour you should follow the manufacturers maintenance schedule.
Q: What power gains can I expect?
A: The average increased performance is 7-12% but each vehicle is different as some dyno charts have shown even better results.
Q: Does this service come with a warranty?
A: Our service comes with a 1 year warranty as per our T&C’s.
Q: Does it void warranty?
A: Any change to the manufacturer’s specification can void the warranty. If you’re in doubt we suggest you contact the manufacturer and/or insurance provider. We will only provide this service if you agree to our T&C’s and accept our Disclaimer.
